Gana, the 11-year-old gorilla, won’t let keepers at Germany’s Muenster zoo near three-month-old Claudio who stopped breathing on Sunday.

The distraught mother has been staring at the corpse in shock, unable to accept her baby is dead. Initially appearing puzzled and bewildered by Claudio’s death, Gana then began stroking the baby trying to bring it back to life.

She then gently placed him on her back, slowly walking around the zoo compound, stopping every few paces to check on him.

Zoo spokeswoman Ilona Zuehlke told FOXNews.com such behavior is not uncommon among gorillas. Gana “is mourning and must say goodbye”, she said.
