In this tutorial, you’ll learn how to use writing sites to find jobs. Here, we’re going to look at 2 sites, Freelancewriting.com and The Guide to Online Guidelines.
We’re going to look at Freelancewriting.com first. (Note that this site is going through a renovation, so things are bit disorganized.) You can also subscribe to this site on Facebook, which will give you feeds to writing jobs.
1 Directly under the logo, I’ll click on Writer’s Guidelines, which brings up the Magazine Guidelines Database in the main window. As I scroll down the page, you’ll see a wide variety of categories.
In this case, I’m going for technology, since I have a background in computers. When I click on the Technology heading I see a long list of magazines. One of them is about gaming, so I decide to click on it.
2. The next pages gives displays a short summary that gives me information about the magazine and a hyperlink to the Writer’s Guidelines. When you click on the link, it will often display the same information as the summary, but not always.
I recommend clicking on both links regardless and copying all the data into Notepad. When you do so, make sure you use a separator for each section. Also, save each search by subject and save each subject separately. That will make it easier to keep track of when you’re sending out your queries later.
3. The Guide to Online Guidelines is a basic directory with links to each magazine. One down side is there’s no search function, so it can be time-consuming to find what you want.
As with the previous site, when you find a listing that interests you, click on the link for more information. Again, make sure to copy all the data into a Notepad file for later reference. One last thing about this site, it hasn’t been updated for some time, probably years, so some of the links are broken and a number of the magazines no longer exist.
