Among the virtues, none is as important as humility. Yes, it’s an ironic statement, but being humble is the most essential thing of all. Humility lays the foundation for the development of all other virtues. With true humility, powerful demons like greed and fear disappear all on their own.
When speaking of true humility, reference is obviously made between real humility and false forms of it. We see in any number of supposed holy men around the world today the false humility that confuses many. This confusion only points up the fact that in order to recognize actual humility, one has to be genuinely humble oneself first. Only an eye that works can see other eyes looking at it.
But what is true humility? Does living a life of poverty help one to achieve it? Does living an anonymous private life help?
Herein lays humility’s greatest conundrum. For all its importance, humility cannot be worked for. It goes against the very nature of humility to seek after it – for the seeking of anything distorts what’s being sought. Humility means above all a correct regard, a correct understanding – keep things in perspective. Humility is not ostentatious obsequiousness, but neither is it a denial of the truth. Kings can be humble though they be kings, although of course one of the most kingly of all is the human man or woman.
So humility is “important,” in a sense, but can’t be sought-after. Can it be developed? How?
Through love. And what is love? Humility in action.
Love comes naturally when the mind is quiet, when we give up the mental background noise we believe to be our own thoughts but which, more frequently than not, is simply opinion we have learned, often unknowingly, from the youngest age.
When we love genuinely, we are naturally humble.
